Information about non epileptic seizures and Non Epileptic Attack Disorder.

Jayne’s Story

Basically, for 16 months my son kept passing out and having what I thought were epileptic seizures. An EEG ruled out epilepsy. We struggled for such a long time; we couldn’t leave him on his own as we were so scared of when the next one would be.

I managed to video one of the seizures and showed it to his neurologist who diagnosed NEAD. I had never heard of it and even though we had a diagnosis, I felt so alone. My son was having suicidal thoughts and we were so worried. We got him counselling and it seems to help.

He is 14 now and depending on what is happening in family life depends how they are. My daughter recently moved abroad and since then he has about 3 a day, they are so close and he misses her dreadfully. For a long time he could only manage part-time in school but we gradually increased this to full-time but I have to take him back and forth as he is nervous of public transport.

He doesn’t have a good relationship with his biological father and that does have an affect on him. We just live one day at a time and I guess that’s all we can do.
