Are We Misunderstanding Fear and Anxiety?

By on 5 August 2015 in News

Joseph LeDoux, a neuroscientist and writer from Louisiana, USA has spent his life researching the brain and in particular the regions of the brain that control our ‘fight or flight’ response. Indeed it was he who laid down the first map of what is called the brain’s “fear circuit,” the regions — centred on the amygdala and its adjacent structures — that together give rise to our ability to respond to threats and danger. Now, in an article in NY Mag, “LeDoux is convinced that, in part owing to his own work, a pervasive misconception has spread through neuroscience and trickled down to popular understanding of science, leading astray our understanding of fear and anxiety.” To read the article in full, click here.
